Position Summary: The Medical Laboratory Manager oversees all laboratory operations for the Student Health Center and provides a wide variety of standard laboratory tests. This position requires independence, expertise in laboratory science and a commitment to maintaining certification standards and following governmental regulations which apply to laboratory practice.

In partnership with the Medical Director of Student Health Services, this position operates the clinical laboratory in the Student Health Center and facilitates the effective delivery of medical laboratory services for clinicians and all health center patients as defined for testing personnel under CLIA.

Responsibilities include: obtain laboratory specimens; conduct a variety of laboratory tests and document results accurately and appropriately; perform quality control on test procedures and equipment, and maintain equipment. The laboratory manager is responsible for the overall operational efficiency of the clinical laboratory. Operational duties include: Cross train clinical staff on CLIA waived testing, evaluate and document the competency testing of all testing personnel, maintain Procedure and Quality Assurance Manuals; maintain laboratory inventory; evaluate and recommend appropriate testing methods; maintain Proficiency Tests and CLIA certification. These duties are in addition to the technical responsibilities. The laboratory manager works closely with the laboratory medical director (MD). The laboratory manager will take an active leadership role with AAAHC chapter standards as assigned, student programming, orientation for freshman students, and providing guest lectures and public speaking for outreach events, as a university employee within the division of student affairs.

Technical Responsibilities 60%

Supplies, Equipment and Testing:

Accountable for maintenance of all laboratory equipment.  May include centrifuge, specimen mixer, microscope, etc.  Maintains documentation for equipment maintenance, yearly calibration, and any repairs or upgrades performed:

  1. Acts as liaison to vendors and technical representatives regarding test procedures, product demonstrations, problems with equipment etc.
  2. Investigates and evaluates new lab products and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee.
  3. Orders and maintains inventory of laboratory supplies.
  4. Responsible for staff compliance with Bloodborne Pathogen standards in the laboratory.
  5. Acts as resource for providers for lab related education and consultation
  6. Ensures that accurate laboratory statistics are collected, documented and saved on the shared drive.


Specimen Acquisition and Lab Testing:

Conducts laboratory testing according to established practices and procedures, using a variety of equipment:

  1. Proficient in venipuncture and capillary puncture.
  2. Prepare and process a variety of specimens, ie blood, urine, feces, throat swabs, vaginal and urethral secretions, etc. 
  3. Identify specimens accurately and document test results.
  4. Able to provide patient instruction in sample collection.
  5. Prepare, process, and log specimens for shipment to reference laboratories
  6. Communicate with reference laboratory and other labs as needed
  7. Maintain laboratory records per state and federal regulatory guidelines.
  8. Explain all test procedures and results to medical providers as needed.
  9. Properly disposes of all hazardous waste. 
  10. Computer technical skills to include reference laboratory, Harvest LIS and PyraMed EMR test ordering and results. 


Laboratory Management 35%

General Laboratory Management

The Laboratory Manager will assume accountability for the safe and quality provision of laboratory service:

  1. Maintains CLIA certification.
  2. Maintains AAAHC accreditation standards for: Pathology and Medical Laboratory Services Infection Prevention and Control and Safety, and  Facilities and Environment.
  3. Develops, revises and updates policies, protocols to ensure quality and efficiency of laboratory operations.
  4. Performs and monitors all proficiency testing
  5. Performs quality control measures on all medical laboratory procedures and equipment daily as required.
  6. Reports adverse incidents, documents risk management events
  7. Participates in developing and implementing quality improvement studies.
  8. Performs a laboratory cost analysis yearly and makes recommendations based on cost and student needs.
  9. Cross-trains Student Health Center staff to perform CLIA waived testing. Medical assistants, student employees, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and providers will be cross trained to perform CLIA waived testing.  Will provide annual competency assessment and maintain documentation of meeting competency.


Reference Laboratory Management:

Accountable for obtaining statistics and completing all documentation for reference laboratory bid process:

  1. Oversees contract with reference lab ensuring quality standards are met.
  2. Acts as liaison for any questions regarding reference lab testing.
  3. Resolves and reports any conflicts that arise with reference laboratory.
  4. Other duties as assigned


Professional Responsibilities 5%

  1. Participate in continuing education opportunities as available.
  2. Maintain professional relationships with other laboratory professionals within Student Health and within our local health care agencies.
  3. Support the mission of the university and division of student affairs strategic priorities.
  4. Support the mission of the Student Health by rooming patients when needed, providing outreach services, etc.
  • Baccalaureate degree in Medical Technology with certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or the American Medical Technologist (AMT).
  • Two or more years of experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Strong communication skills, excellent organizational skills, careful attention to detail and the ability to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously are required.
  • Proficient in public speaking, providing educational programming, and/or classroom instruction to present information to groups/classrooms.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, internet, electronic mail, and EMR software.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Management experience, including the supervision and training of staff.
  • Experience with preparing for and maintaining CLIA Certification.
