Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director at the Environmental Research and Innovation Center.  The ERIC is a state of the art research and testing lab that offers a full range of water, renewable energy, and compost testing capabilities. The Associate Director will be responsible for the daily operations of the facility including client management as well as all staff and student employees.  The Associate Director will also review the unit budget, implement training programs, compile data for internal policy requests, implement protocols and testing procedures for the lab, and evaluate the programs and policies that are used by the laboratory.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with the overall operations and administration of the laboratory including the employment of personnel. Records and reports test results promptly, accurately, and proficiently and ensures compliance with applicable regulations.

  • Helps evaluate programs and policies in the laboratory to identify improvements and efficiencies to ensure a high level of service
  • Assists with planning staff implementation of protocols and on-going quality review of laboratory services
  • Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • May assist with developing and monitoring the laboratory budget and reviewing and approving expenditures
  • Analyzes portfolios and accounts, solicits internal and external opportunities, promotes unit capabilities, and makes recommendations to leadership for strategic enhancements
  • Compiles, audits, and documents data to ensure necessary compliance with institutional policies and procedures
  • Implements and evaluates teaching, training, and outreach activities

 

Qualifications  
Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a field appropriate for this position (i.e., Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, etc.).
  • One (1) year of experience working in an environmental laboratory or conducting field research.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct field sampling and laboratory analysis.
  • Familiarity with data management systems such as LIMS and record-keeping within laboratory settings.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred:
  • Master's Degree
  • Experience working with a variety of environmental sampling and analysis techniques.
  • Proven ability to supervise and manage staff, including performance management and team training.
  • Experience in monitoring budgets, reviewing expenditures, and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Ability to manage client relationships, ensure high-quality service standards, and maintain trust through effective communication.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing or overseeing quality control protocols within a laboratory setting to ensure compliance and accuracy.
