Position Summary:

The functions of this position include, but are not limited to, administration of faculty and instructional academic staff human resource management issues regarding recruitment, retention, renewal, tenure, promotion, and terminations. This position is also responsible for handling communication between Academic Affairs and faculty/academic staff; developing and providing professional development opportunities for faculty/academic staff; revision and implementation of policies incorporated in, and maintenance of, the University Faculty and Academic Staff Handbook in cooperation with shared governance bodies; participate in conflict resolution for faculty, academic staff, and student issues not resolved at previous levels; Academic Affairs representative to the Behavioral Intervention Team; Member of the International Education Emergency Response Team; providing research and support for the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; and miscellaneous academic issues and activities as assigned. Units reporting to this position include: Office of International Education, the Student Opinion Survey Program, Testing Services, and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

Responsibilities
  1. Administration of Faculty and Academic Staff Human Resource Issues – 40% 

  1. Orientation for new faculty and instructional academic staff 

  1. Academic leadership workshops 

  1. Develop and provide professional opportunities for faculty/academic staff 

  1. Appointment/Retention/Renewal and Nonrenewal/Promotion/Tenure/Post Tenure Review/Separations/Title Change/Salary Equity 

  1. Supervision of university and academic staff members in the Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs 

  1. Conflict resolution/Complaints/Grievances for faculty and instructional academic staff that do not fall under the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access or the Human Resources Office 

  1. Coordination with the Chancellor’s Office, The Equal Opportunity and Access Office, and the Human Resource Office in regard to personnel issues 

  1. Provost’s representative at various University of Wisconsin System meetings 

  1. Back-up to Provost, in his absence 

 

  1. Faculty and Academic Staff Policy Consultations – 20% 

  1. Policy development, interpretation, revisions, communication 

  1. Liaison between administration and faculty/academic staff groups 

  1. Faculty and instructional academic staff investigations, consultations with University of Wisconsin System legal counsel, etc. 

 

  1. Supervision and general administrative – 20% 

  1. Supervision and administrative oversight of International Education, Testing Services, and Student Opinion Survey Program; and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning 

  1. Participation in budget development / maintenance process for units that report to this position. 

  1. Coordination of administrator evaluation process 

  1. Coordination of various administrative search and screen committees 

  1. Signature authority for immigration documents for foreign faculty and academic staff 

  1. Supervision of annual administrative calendar 

 

  1. Committee Leadership and Involvement – 20% 

  1. Administrative representative on the following committees – Salary Equity; Senate of Academic Staff; Compensation; various awards, fellowships; Students Care Team, and the Behavioral Intervention Team. 

  1. Member of the following groups: Leadership Council, Provost’s Administrative Staff and Chancellor’s Administrative Staff 

Qualifications  
Required:
  1. Experience in academic administration or leadership roles in higher education, with demonstrated ability to oversee policy and personnel initiatives
  1. Doctorate or terminal degree relevant to the position 

  1. Must be eligible for tenure and rank of full or associate professor 

  1. Demonstrated record and commitment to teaching, scholarly activity, and service 

  2. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred:
  1. Three (3) years of experience in academic administration or leadership, preferably within higher education, demonstrating effective management of programs and initiatives

  1. Proven interpersonal, analytical, and decision-making skills 

  1. Conflict resolution and mediation skills with a demonstrated ability to manage sensitive faculty and staff issues effectively and impartially

  1. Experience and commitment to shared governance environment 

  1. Demonstrated commitment to faculty development 

  1. Administrative experience in a university system 

  1. Energetic, open, and collegial administrative style
