The UWOPD Dispatcher position evaluates and acts upon information and knowledge regarding safety, law enforcement and the University in general. This position is responsible for communication via radio, Mobile Data Computer (MDC) terminal, telephone, written correspondence, computer programs and chatting and in-person conversation & customer service. This position coordinates emergency and non-emergency communication between the UW Oshkosh Police Department and other campus departments, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency medical units and other agencies. This position is also responsible for monitoring alarm panels, numerous radio frequencies, and acts as the after-hours emergency contact for the campus community.

The UWOPD offers training opportunities to those who express interest in areas outside their daily duties, but also meet the needs of the Police Departments operations. 

In addition, the position is responsible for maintaining the computerized police record keeping system, ensuring accuracy in all entries, providing dispatch training to all dispatchers and officers, and ensuring security measures are being met with regards to confidential information and record retention.

This position is eligible for Night Differential Pay for time worked between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM. If interested in learning more about this please review UW System Administrative Policy 1277.

Responsibilities
  • Operates police radios, phone consoles, and various equipment and technologies to receive and processes requests and information from institutional affiliates, law enforcement, and other public safety agencies
    • Monitor alarm systems (fire, intrusion, emergency phone, mobile app, environmental) and initiate, document, and coordinate appropriate response.

  • Schedules logistics and secures resources for response to emergency incidents for the institution
    • Record and maintain officer location and status checks into database. 

  • Communicates effectively and provides accurate and detailed instructions to all types of audiences in high stress emergency situations
    • Relay emergency and non-emergency information received to other appropriate agencies based on department capabilities and jurisdiction.
  • Troubleshoots, triages, and escalates issues according to established policies and procedures
    • Receive and process Emergency Notification System requests for UW Oshkosh Police Department or other University departments and individuals.

  • Documents incidents accurately and adheres to all applicable policies, rules, and regulations

  • Trains new dispatchers, manages training task updates, and provides training and coaching weekly reports. Assists in ensuring training initiatives are completed
    • Provide training, leadership, motivation, and insight to student employees and officers performing dispatch duties.

  • Maintains complex records of information in directories and alarm databases, ensures continuity of operations plans, and ensures other resources are accurate and up-to-date

  • Assists with leading and coordinating projects
Qualifications

 

Required:

1. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion

2. High school diploma or equivalent. 

3. At least 2 years of experience in a customer service-related position. 

4. Knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)

5. Ability to perform varied tasks quickly, accurately and simultaneously while under stress. 

6. Ability to recognize and protect confidential information 

7. Must have a positive attitude and be proactive and team oriented.

8. Good vision, hearing and an ability to tune in and out background noises.

Preferred:

1. Associate degree or higher college degree 

2. Prior experience in a dispatch center or a communications center capacity. 

3. Knowledge of the TIME system procedures and DOT/NCIC/CIB polices and guidelines. 

4. Some knowledge of Police authority, judicial procedures, and law enforcement reporting requirements 

5. Ability to operate communications systems, including two-way radio dispatch equipment, multiple-line telephone systems, MDC systems, and alarms systems.
