Position Summary:

Serve as the Academic Advisor to a caseload of approximately 80 students who are members of the UW Oshkosh Student Support Services (SSS) STEM program.  The SSS STEM program serves 120 UW Oshkosh students annually.  SSS students are first-generation college (parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree) students and/or students whose family income meets federally established guidelines.  Students with a document disability may also be served in the program.  The goal of SSS STEM is to increase the college persistence and graduation rates of the students it serves.  SSS STEM is one of the U.S. Department of Education funded TRIO programs.

During the academic year, evening hours on a weekly basis may be required. Evening hours in the summer and weekend hours during both the academic year and summer on an occasional basis are required.

Responsibilities

50% Provide support for an assigned caseload of student participants in the areas of academic advising, life skills development, student success development, career planning, financial literacy, and financial aid and scholarship assistance. Encourage students to participate fully in the college experience including study abroad, internship opportunities and consideration of graduate school.

1. Assess student needs and develop an individualized student success plan. Monitor student progress employing developmental, proactive, and appreciative academic advising methods.

2. Monitor student grades, grade-point averages, and progress towards graduation.

3. Refer SSS students to other service providers on campus such as the Center for Academic Resources, Financial Aid, Registrar, Student Accounts, Counseling Center, Reading/Study Center, Disability Services, Project Success, etc.

4. Maintain detailed and accurate records of student contacts. Assist in updating and maintaining student files as required by federal and institutional regulations.

25% Assist in the development and implementation of project services under the direction of the program director and in collaboration with the other SSS/SSS STEM staff members.

1. Keep current with trends and knowledge in the fields of student success programs.

2. Employ best practices and success strategies in the design, implementation, and assessment of the SSS/SSS STEM program components.

3. In collaboration with SSS/SSS STEM colleagues, develop, provide overall direction to, and evaluate either the SSS/SSS STEM Learning Groups for first-year students or the Peer Mentoring program for second-year students. Assure seamless transition between the two components. Train and provide direction and guidance to student employees serving as Learning Group Leaders or Peer Mentors. Be present at Learning Group or Peer Mentor activities and events.

4. Create, implement, conduct, and assess academic workshops, activities, and events for SSS/SSS STEM students. 

10% Recruit eligible students into the program and obtain documentation to verify program eligibility.

5% Advocate for first-generation and limited-income students.

5% Communicate and collaborate with the campus community. Serve on campus committees and participate in campus events and activities.

5% Perform other duties as assigned by the SSS/SSS STEM Director.

Qualifications  
Required:

Bachelor’s degree. 

Experience working with educational programs specifically with marginalized, underrepresented student populations. 

Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills. 

Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff. 

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. 

Preferred:

Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or a related field.

Advising or counseling experience.

Experience supporting the needs of first-generation, income eligible students.

Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with Student Support Services (SSS) and/or other TRIO programs. 

Proficient in another language other than English; Bilingual in Spanish and/or Hmong preferred.
