Position Summary:

The Theatre Department of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Oshkosh campus seeks a Lecturer and Scenic Designer for an academic program with a production season of four main stage productions plus student projects. This full time, fixed-term terminal, academic year position’s responsibilities are split between teaching courses for the department and scenic design and painting for productions as part of an undergraduate liberal arts BA/BS theatre program. Yearly rehire of position is possible.

50% Scenic Design and Scenic Painting
• Responsible for the on-time planning, drawing/drafting of set designs including scenic painting and assisting with load in and load out of sets in collaboration with the Technical Director.
• Provide ground plans, models and digital drafted documents for each production.
• Mentoring of student scenic designers and stage managers.
• Communicates with Costume Designer, Technical Director/Lighting Designer in relation to the scenic design choices.
• Establish and maintain a safe working environment and adhere to production budgets, deadlines and protocols.
50% Teaching
• This 1.0 FTE position is contingent on enrollment and teaching 12 credits over the academic year.
• Teach Theatre Core classes including Fundamentals of Design and Stage Management.
• Teach rotating Design Emphasis courses; Design Studio I, II, III and Painting and Dyeing, and Culture and Styles.
• Teach theatre general education and other courses, as needed by the department.
• Mentoring of student designers during shop hours and in preparation for presenting at conferences and festivals

1. Master of Fine Arts or equivalent terminal degree in Scenic Design or Theatre Design at time of application

2. Practical knowledge of and experience using computerized drafting and design programs

3. Demonstrated experience in scenic design, scenic painting and prop design.

4. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion


1. Two or more years of university teaching experience

2. Two years professional experience as a Scenic Designer

3. Ability to teach Scenic Drafting and Design using both mechanical and computerized methods using programs such as Vectorworks and Adobe Photoshop

4. Knowledge of and/or preferred membership in off campus activities consistent with duties of this job such as Membership in United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT)

5. Ability to teach Scenic Painting and assist in the painting of the scenic designs during the production season Essential Skills (if applicable):
