Position Summary:

This position is responsible for interior and exterior building and equipment maintenance, roof maintenance, welding, metal work and fabrication. Must have a valid WI driver’s license and be authorized to drive a University vehicle upon appointment.

This position will function as a member of the Facilities Management Maintenance team, providing customer service and relations to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh community. Employees are expected to be flexible in the performance of their job functions and to communicate openly with supervisors and co-workers, other departments and University staff. This position may occasionally be asked to work hours in excess of the normal shift (7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday – Friday) on nights, weekends. This position will require a criminal background investigation. Must pass a pre-work screen to ensure the ability to perform essential physical functions of the position.


A. Performance of Building and Equipment Maintenance

1. Assemble, install and/or repair wood and metal furniture, shelves, bookcases, cabinets, partitions, etc.

2. Install and repair, windows, doors, weather stripping, door closures & hardware, screens and related locks, hinges, handles, window blinds & shades, etc.

3. Repair and install ceramic and vinyl tile; ceiling tile.

4. Install draperies, rods, window blinds and related hardware.

5. Repair and replace floor boards, base boards, carpeting, stair treads, etc.

6. Operate and maintain a variety of power tools and equipment – drill press, circular & table saw, sanders, etc. to cut, form and shape wood and metal objects.

7. Install and repair restroom equipment and partitions.

B. Provision of Assistance to Crafts and Facility Repair Workers

1. Work with and assist in the construction, repair and remodeling projects (e.g. wall, floor removal and construction, brick and block laying, painting and staining).

2. Set-up and dismantle forms for concrete and other repair work.

3. Build forms, prepare surfaces and assist in the pouring of concrete.

4. Assist in concrete finishing.

5. Inspect, repair and replace ceiling, carpet and floor tile.

6. Repair masonry and plaster walls, partitions, etc.

7. Operate construction equipment (e.g. dump truck, backhoe, front-end loader) to assist with demolition and construction projects.

C. Welding (Arc), Metal Working & Fabrication

1. Weld and repair metal door frames, carts, etc.

2. Repair metal carts, dumpsters, casters and wheels.

3. Fabricate metal parts, frames, brackets, hangers, etc.

4. Weld broken or fabricate replacement parts.

5. Weld and repair metal furniture.

D. Provision of Roof Maintenance

1. Inspect roofs to determine the condition of roof, source of problem, method of repair.

2. Report to supervisor the general condition of the roof and necessary materials to repair problem areas.

3. Prepare surface and install coatings on aluminum-coated roofs to repair leaks or improve the condition of roof surfaces.

4. Prepare and paint rooftop HVAC equipment.

E. Miscellaneous Duties

1. Perform grounds maintenance activities (e.g. fence repair, paint / stain wood fences).

2. Assist Locksmiths in the installation and repair of mortise and cabinet locks, and related hardware.

3. Install bulletin boards, white marking boards, pictures, etc.

4. Erect and disassemble scaffolding.

5. Accurately record time & materials on work order forms and route accordingly.

6. Inventory and inform supervisor of materials to be ordered.

7. Other duties as assigned.


Must have sufficient physical flexibility to squat, stoop, crawl under cabinets and other low and confined spaces in order to complete assigned work.

Ability to perform physical labor including: heavy lifting, bending, stooping, twisting and other motions.

Ability to climb stairs, ladders (8 & 10 ft), extension ladders, scaffolding, automated scissor-lift, bucket truck and reach above head in order to work on projects and to complete work performed on interior and exterior of campus buildings.

Physical ability to stand and/or walk for long periods of time.

Ability to perform duties within extreme hot and cold temperature ranges, dusty and dirty work environments to complete job assignments.

Work experience using and operating a wide variety of hand (e.g. hammers, saws, pry bars) and power tools (e.g. pneumatic hammer, hammer drills, core drills, skill saw, sawzall, radial arm saw, block saw, tile cutter, pneumatic staplers and nailers) to perform construction and demolition projects.


Work knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to building remodeling and construction.

Experience operating construction equipment to perform demolition and construction (e.g. tractors, backhoe, front-end loader, bucket truck, dump truck, forklift).

Experience welding doors, frames, etc., using arc welding equipment; plasma cutter, torch.

Experience with form, pour and finish concrete walks, floors, etc.

Experience installing/repairing brick and block masonry walls.

Experience with the install and repair of drywall, ceiling tile, vinyl and ceramic tile.

Ability to read, follow instructions and keep accurate records.

Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

Ability to follow and work within guidelines as established by the department; be prompt and recognize start, break and quitting times.

Ability to organize work, perform work assignments and maintain truck, tools and work area in a clean well organized manner.
