Responsibilities This full-time position involves performing and managing activities related to a parasite life cycle involving mosquitoes and rodents for the NIH/NIAID Filariasis Research Reagent Resource Center (FR3) (www.filariasiscenter.org). This person will have technical and managerial duties and is expected to perform all duties requisite for maintaining the Brugia malayi and Brugia pahangi life cycles including: surgical worm transplants, pre-and post-operative monitoring of laboratory rodents, mosquito colony husbandry, larval worm collection, rodent infections, mosquito infections, isolation and culturing of adult worms, laboratory animal documentation, monitoring general health of animals, shipping documentation, and record keeping. The applicant will also be responsible for interfacing with FR3 users, shipping parasite reagents to FR3 users, training and managing undergraduate students, compiling and maintaining compliance paperwork, conducting laboratory ordering, and performing contract-related budgeting. Training will be provided for all responsibilities. Future work may involve transgenesis of parasitic filarial worms. Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results. Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders. Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences. Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials. Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers. Performs literature reviews and writes reports. Coordinate student worker schedules in the lab and facilitate shipment of orders to FR3 users.
Qualifications

 

 

Required:

Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences

High level of organization

Excellent communication skills (including comfort with electronic communication)

Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred:

Master’s degree or certified/licensed as a Veterinary Technician

Background in animal handling and/or animal research

Experience in a biology research lab

Acarology or entomology experience or background
