Position Summary:

The journey-level Electrician position provides electrical service to the entire University community – repair, preventive maintenance and modification to existing fixtures and systems; installation of new equipment and systems; outside lighting and high voltage work. Must be a licensed journey-level Electrician by the State of Wisconsin. Must have a valid WI driver’s license and be authorized to drive a University vehicle, upon appointment. Must pass a pre-work screen to ensure the ability to perform essential physical functions of the position. A criminal background check will be required.

This position will function as a member of the Facilities Management Maintenance team (plumbers, steamfitters, electricians, HVAC mechanics, and facilities maintenance specialists), providing customer service and relations to the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh community. Employees are expected to be flexible in the performance of their job functions and to communicate openly with supervisors and co-workers, other departments and University staff. This position may occasionally be asked to work hours in excess of the normal shift (7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday – Friday) and after-hour call-ins.

A. Maintenance and Repair to Campus Electrical Systems 1) Repair all building lighting systems (e.g. fixtures, ballast socket and bulbs, exit light fixtures) with lighting voltage of 120, 208, 277, and 480. 2) Repair and maintain fire alarm system components (e.g. smoke and heat detectors, strobe lights, piezo horns, battery chargers); replace batteries, circuit boards, and panel components – fiber optic boards, main power supplies, 4009 booster panels. 3) Troubleshoot and repair campus building electrical systems that distribute secondary voltage to building lights, switches, motors, DDC systems, etc. 4) Troubleshoot, repair and/or replace motors (voltage from 120 volts to 480 volts) and motor components (e.g. starters, controls, pressure switches, thermostat control circuitry). 5) Install and troubleshoot variable frequency drives connected to motors, chillers and pumps. 6) Assist other maintenance personnel in troubleshooting and repairing HVAC systems, food service & laundry equipment and other building electrical and electronic components.

B. Remodeling of Campus Buildings 1) Remove existing electrical components (e.g. electrical panels, switches, lights, outlets, and conduit) to facilitate remodeling and updates to buildings. 2) Install electrical circuitry (e.g. panel boards, circuit breakers, conduit, wire, switches, fuses, receptacles, lighting fixtures, motor starters) for new and remodel projects following all National Electrical Codes. 3) Install “special” electrical systems (e.g. fire alarm, clock, digital controls, fiber optic lines and emergency alarm systems). 4) Install 12,500 voltage cable, splice and terminate.

C. Outside Lighting 1) Operate the Johnson Control Metasys Energy Management System to facilitate repair of outside lighting. 2) Install, repair/replace and maintain outdoor lighting (e.g. fixtures, pole lights, parking lot lights, wall packs, recessed fixtures); ballast, bulbs and fixtures; will work from a bucket truck, extension ladders up to 40’, or step ladders up to 14’.

D. High Voltage Repair and Maintenance 1) Inspect, clean and maintain the 12,500 volt substation and high voltage distribution system; perform preventative maintenance, identify and repair high voltage cable connections and back-up battery phasing system. 2) Remove, clean and reinstall high voltage breakers in 12,500 volt systems main substation. 3) Inspect, clean and maintain the 12,500 volt pad mount switchgear, primary building transformers and switchgear. 4) Replace fuses in 12,500 volt building transformers.

E. Miscellaneous Duties 1) Read, draw, and update original and new schematic wiring diagrams. 2) Incorporate and follow all safety guidelines/rules (e.g. Electrical Arc Flash Compliance, OSHA, Department of Commerce) into work processes. 3) Assist other maintenance staff. 4) Accurately complete work orders and related paperwork in a timely manner. 5) Other duties as assigned


Must be a licensed journey-level Electrician by the State of Wisconsin.

Must have or be able to obtain a valid WI driver’s license and be authorized via Risk Management to drive a university vehicle upon appointment.

Ability to perform physical labor including: heavy lifting, bending, stooping, twisting and other motions; ability to work with arms above head for extended periods of time with or without a reasonable accommodation.

Ability to work from a bucket truck, extension ladders up to 40’ and step ladders up to 14’.

Ability to work in special clothing and common protective safety attire.

A criminal background check will be required.

Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of the electrician trade.

Working knowledge of state and national electrical codes.

Working knowledge of major types of electrical installations, common and unusual breakdowns, and standard repair procedures.

Working knowledge and ability to identify, inspect and perform maintenance to high voltage cable connections; perform maintenance on the systems back-up batteries.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade.

Experience reading, interpreting, and working from plans, blueprints, drawings and sketches.

Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Medium voltage experience (12,470 volt).

Installation following blue prints and specs.

Served an Indentured Apprenticeship.

Experience with food service equipment installation and repair.

Experience with card access installation and repair.
