Position Summary:

The Dean of the College of Letters and Science (COLS) will provide leadership and guidance for the departments and programs in the COLS at the three campuses (Fond du Lac, Fox Cities, and Oshkosh) of the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO) while supporting its mission to provide a broad-based liberal arts education to students. UWO is one of the largest comprehensive institutions in the UW System, and the COLS is the largest of the colleges at UWO. It supports three professional colleges, the Honors College and the Division of Online and Continuing Education. Within the system of shared governance, the Dean is accountable to the faculty, staff, students and stakeholders of the COLS and makes decisions concerning staffing, personnel, budget, strategic planning and program development. The Dean will foster a diverse and vibrant academic community that embraces change, current trends and technology to enhance the visibility of the college. The Dean will represent the COLS and the University’s interests within the community and foster collaborative opportunities for wider community engagement and economic development at the University and beyond. Additionally, the Dean will work collegially and equitably across the University to support faculty, staff and student interests.

UWO seeks a dynamic and innovative leader that will serve an increasingly diverse student body, support faculty diversification that is commensurate with the composition of the changing student populations and face the current issues in higher education with collaborative, creative problem solving.

Responsible to:

The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.


Leadership – 50%

  1. Use visionary leadership to promote the mission, vision, values and strategic goals of the university and the COLS.
  2. Direct and administer educational programs in the COLS by promoting excellence in teaching/learning, scholarship, practice and service.
  3. Serve as the COLS’s liaison to the university administration.
  4. Demonstrate effective communication to foster a sense of community and an environment of collegiality, integrity and inclusive excellence.
  5. Sustain memberships and provide leadership within appropriate professional and academic organizations.
  6. Support the continuous improvement of the teaching/learning programs and curriculum development.
  7. Continue to unify the COLS over three campuses.

Administration – 30% 

  1. Develop and implement academic policies and procedures for the College of Letters and Science in collaboration with the COLS Faculty Committee.
  2. Recruit, retain and evaluate faculty and staff via established personnel policies and ensure appropriate faculty and staff professional development.
  3. Achieve and maintain national and state accreditation for appropriate the COLS programs.
  4. Maintain fiscal responsibility and accountability for all State of Wisconsin accounts, related revenue and fund development opportunities (including fundraising).
  5. Plan, develop, implement and evaluate educational programs and services to achieve the goals of the college; oversee the COLS budget, class schedules, classroom and facilities utilization and coordinate programs and services with other college personnel.

 Advocacy – 20% 

  1. Advocate for the COLS in the university and the community. Serve as liaison between the college and affiliating agencies.
  2. Strongly support the liberal arts education mission of the COLS.
  3. Foster relationships with internal and external stakeholder in order to offer high quality programs.
  4. Represent the COLS at University of Wisconsin System, state, national and international forums related to the liberal arts, higher education, economic development and civic engagement.


  • Ph.D. or equivalent in a discipline related to the COLS
  • Faculty experience which qualifies the candidate for tenure at the rank of associate professor or higher in the COLS
  • Effective interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets (e.g., college, department, grants) and fiscal compliance
  • Supervisory experience
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated experience engaging on issues of inclusive excellence and working collaboratively with diverse constituencies
  • Knowledge of current higher education issues


  • Administrative experience in higher education appropriate to the leadership role
  • Fundraising experience
  • Evidence of a collaborative, collegial, and equitable administrative style
  • Demonstrated collaboration with shared governance and constituent groups
  • Experience with change management and technological applications
